Pitahaya, or dragon fruit is a delicious fruit with many health benefits.
The pitahaya is the most extraordinary member of the Cactaceae family. It needs a lot of heat for its cultivation. The pitahaya has a soft red or yellow skin, covering a light-coloured flesh with numerous, small black seeds.
The leaves of the fruit resemble the scales of a dragon. That is the reason why it is also known internationally as the Dragon Fruit.
Named as exotic fruit for its flavour and colour, it contains vitamin C, which influences the constitution of bones, since it helps the absorption of the iron contained in food, antioxidant action and defence against infections.
The pitahaya can be eaten raw, in fruit salads, or it can be added to smoothies, homemade ice cream, or it can also be used to prepare compotes, or in cakes and biscuits, etc. Its flavour resemble a mix between a kiwi and a pear.
